Meet Miss Ohio
After her start in the Miss Ohio Scholarship Program and exciting experience becoming 1st Runner-up at Miss Ohio 2006, Becky gained her second local title and returned to Miss Ohio as the 32nd Miss Northwestern Ohio in 2007. Returning to Miss Ohio in 2008 as Miss Maumee Valley, she won 1st Runner up and won 1st Runner up again as Miss Fallen Timbers 2009! Her achievements at Miss Ohio qualified her to compete in Hoopeston, Illinois at Miss National Sweetheart, along with the 1st Runner ups from 41 other states, where she was named into the Top 10, on the national stage, in both 2008 and 2009! Now, After 5 tries and 3 times winning the position of first runner up, she was crowned Miss Ohio on June 19, 2010.
Growing up, Becky struggled with her self-esteem. As a shy student with a learning disability; she felt separated from her peers and was a victim of bullying. Her platform, “Discovering You, Empowering You: A Movement for Youth Development” has grown and changed, but still focuses on four main points; building and utilizing a Healthy Self Image, Respecting Yourself and Others, Setting Goals, and Recognizing avenues of Support, as a way to help children with their self-esteem. She has written a curriculum, called “Discovering You!”©, reviewed by a family psychologist, an esteemed educator and a marketing expert which was adopted by The YMCA of Greater Toledo, and a number of schools. After receiving a grant from YIPEE! (Youth In Philanthropy Encouraging Excellence) and the validation of these teens, the program will continue in the Toledo area. As her platform has taken shape over the years, she focuses her work not only on self-esteem, but a movement to empower students, to stop bullying, and to help prevent youth violence. She believes that by raising our children’s self-esteem we can begin to combat the underlying problems that can quickly transform into outward acts of bullying and violence.
As Miss Ohio, Becky also began working with The Thank You Foundation, an organization that was started with “the belief that the words ‘thank you’ could transcend political, religious, and ideological differences and could provide an opportunity so that every citizen could express their appreciation for those that serve and that have served our country”. The Thank You Foundation assists in providing direct support for Veterans, Active Duty Personnel, and their families, has planned and participated in a number of special events honoring Veterans, Military Personnel, and their Families. TTYF regularly participates in Family Readiness activities, deployment briefings, family day events, mobilization briefs, and deployment and homecoming events, and has helped to supply active duty units with school supplies, clothing, and toys to distribute to Iraqi children, among many other activities and services. Through her involvement, Becky quickly became devoted to help grow the mission of appreciation to our service members and their families. As Miss Ohio, Becky was an honorary board member, and the national spokesperson for The Thank You Foundation, she was an advocate for our military children and families and utilized her time as Miss Ohio to encourage people around the country to support our troops and their families and to show appreciation for their service and bravery. She has had many amazing adventures with TTYF, including participating in countless events, trips to visit bases across Ohio and the country, and the humbling experience of visiting our Wounded Warriors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Because of her involvement with The Thank You Foundation and her continued passion to serve our military personnel, Becky hopes to find her career serving our Troops, our Veterans, and their families. Becky now serves on the Board of Directors for The Thank You Foundation and is the National Spokesperson for the Foundation.
Becky was honored to represent the state of Ohio in the 90th Anniversary Miss America Pageant at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, and to work with all of the wonderful sponsors, and volunteers! The Miss America Organization is the leading achievement program for women in the world, making available over $45 million in scholarships each year to ladies across the country. MAO provides women with the opportunity to grow and challenge themselves as both students, and professionals. After 90 years, Miss America is still providing young women with a platform to serve and works as a springboard into the next phase of our titleholder’s lives, as they prepare for a wide range of careers. “Thank you to the Miss America Organization for such an amazing, once in a lifetime experience to be on the Miss America stage, and for the amazing opportunities that this organization has provided to further my personal and professional goals”. Becky is honored to forever be a part of the 90th Anniversary class of Miss America and to be among less than 5,000 women who have ever set foot on the Miss America stage!
As Becky moves forward as Miss Ohio, she will continue to focus her efforts on her platform, and her work to serve our military personnel and their families. After her year of service, and with her degree in Interpersonal Communications and Political Science minor from Bowling Green State University under her belt, Becky will continue into the next exciting phase of her life as she searches for her next prospect as a young professional.
